Ketamine Services at Integrative Mental Health

Ketamine Molecule 3-D Model

“Ketamine…might be the most important breakthrough in antidepressant treatment in decades.”

Thomas Insel,

Former Director, National Institute of Mental Health

“Ketamine is a unique and beautiful medicine.” —Raquel Bennet, PsyD (founder, Kriya Institute)

Ketamine has been in continuous use as a safe and effective anesthetic since the early 1970’s. As a medical compound, it is so safe that it was carried by US soldiers during the Vietmam War so that, if a comrade was injured, their pain could be treated before the arrival of a medic (it is from this that Ketamine got one of its nicknames—The “Buddy Drug”). As an anesthetic, Ketamine exerts its actions not by causing unconsciousness, rather by disconnecting the conscious mind from the experience of pain, a phenomenon knows as dissociation.

In recent years, interest in Ketamine as a mental health treatment has grown exponentially. It is FDA approved in IV form (ketamine hydrochoride), and as a nasal spray (esketamine, brand name Spravato), for the treatment of Treatment Resistant Major Depression. There is also evidence to support the use of Ketamine in the treatment of bipolar depression, ruminative suicidal ideation, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and pain with depression, with ongoing research into other disorders—post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), substance use disorders, anxiety associated with death, anorexia, and chronic relational problems (personality disorders).

Finally, Ketamine can also be useful as an adjunct to psychotherapy, by helping the client discuss topics that are too difficult or painful to talk about otherwise, and possibly even promoting non-ordinary states of consciousness with the potential to bring about profound personal transformations.

At Integrative Mental Health, we are excited to offer Ketamine services across the range of applications described above, individually-tailored to each client’s needs. As with any treatment, Ketamine is not for everyone. The maxim “First Do No Harm” will help us determine for whom Ketamine might not be the best treatment option. For those who might benefit, the maxim “Do Good However Possible” will guide us in developing a collaborative and truly integrative treatment plan.
